FAQ's

How can I join the BSU?

Becoming a member of the Black Student Union is remarkably easy. You just have to show up! Check the section on Getting Involved for more information.

Who is your president?

BSU does not have a presidential structure. Our executive board is multi-lateral so that all decisions reflect the wishes of the mass as much as possible. Each executive board member has different responsibilities, but an equal voice. More information about the individual positions can be found in our constitution.

When are your meetings?

We meet Thursdays from 6pm-8pm.

Is BSU just for Black people?

No! Everyone is welcome to come to our meetings, events, and everything in between :) Come say hi!

I don't have a lot of free time. Are there still ways for me to be involved in BSU?

Yes!! Many of our members have extremely busy schedules. Here are some strategies that some of them use to stay in the loop with BSU.

  1. Attend BSU study tables. Since you have to study for your classes anyway, why not study with us.

  2. Drop in on our mass meetings or programs even if you can't stay the entire time. We realize you may not want to leave once you're there, but we understand if you need to.

  3. Plan a mass meeting or program related to your other interests. If you're having a problem finding time for all of your interests, bring them all together in BSU.

What is the difference between a hate crime & a bias-incident?

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a hate crime is a “crime of violence, property damage, or threat that is motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias based on race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation."Within the State of Michigan, a person is guilty of ethnic intimidation if that person maliciously threatens or physically contacts a person with intent to intimidate, harass or damage the property of that person because of his or her race, color, religion, gender or national origin. Bias incidents are non-criminal activities that harm.
